Snow Removal

The Township of Wilmot is committed to providing safe roads for the travelling public during the winter season using efficient, economical and environmentally friendly methods.

Roads

The Township maintains approximately 250 kilometres of rural and urban roads throughout Wilmot. During the winter season, winter maintenance is conducted in accordance with the Ontario Minimum Maintenance Standards for Highways, with regular patrols conducted to monitor conditions and deploy equipment and materials as necessary.

Municipal Parking Lots

The Township contracts out the winter maintenance for municipal parking lots. Overnight parking in these lots is strictly prohibited.

Snow Removal Guidelines

The Region of Waterloo and Grand River Transit are responsible for the clearing of snow at all bus stops in Wilmot Township.

 Should you have concerns regarding a bus stop, please call them at 519-585-7555 or visit Grand River Transit website

It is illegal to deposit snow from your property onto the roadway under the Highway Traffic Act.

If a fire hydrant near your property is buried by drifts or snow banks please dig it out or contact the Public Works Department.

Please assist the snowplow operators by making sure;

  • The bottom of your mailbox is, at minimum, 107- 114cm (42”- 45”) above the road, based on Canada Post regulations
  • It is in a good state of repair and not an obstruction
  • The mailbox must be able to withstand the impact of snow/slush

If your mailbox is damaged by direct contact of the plow or wing during winter maintenance activities please submit the online form for a Damaged Mailbox which will be reviewed by staff to determine if a replacement is warranted based on the mailbox replacement policy.

When plowing operations begin the operators are following routes that have been designed to minimize duplication and maximize efficiency. The length of time to complete a route varies however, it may take approximately five hours without an excessive amount of snow.

The Township clears sidewalks in front of municipal property, walkways and along back lotted properties. Remember all property owners are required to remove snow and ice from sidewalks adjacent to their property within 24 hours of a winter storm. If you need help clearing the snow from your sidewalks, please contact Community Care Concepts at 855-664-1900.

Parking is prohibited from December 1 to March 31 between 2:30 and 6 am, or when a Snow Event is declared. During the winter months By-Law actively enforces this and failure to abide to the parking restrictions in a fine or towed vehicle.

Through the Boulevard Parking Program, from December 1 to March 31 each year, vehicles are permitted to be parked on the paved portion of a boulevard (i.e driveway ramp or apron), provided that the vehicle complies with certain conditions as outlined on the Parking page.
