Drinking Water

The Township commits to provide safe and secure infrastructure for all residents. One of the services provided is the distribution and delivery of safe drinking water.

On this page:

Water Distribution Systems

As owner and operator of the distribution systems the Township is responsible to operate and maintain the watermains, valves, reducers, mechanical joints, etc.

The Township owns and operates the following water distribution systems:

  • Baden/New Hamburg/Shingletown/Mannheim
  • New Dundee
  • St. Agatha
  • Petersburg

Township responsibilities begin where treated water, supplied by the Region of Waterloo, enters the distribution system.

Water Meters

All properties connected to the municipal water system are required to have a water meter and remote reader installed in the home or building. The meter will measure and record the volume of water used. This information will be used by the Township to bill the property owner. The Township reads your meter through radio interface, so no meter reader needs to approach your property.

Questions or concerns regarding your water meter should be directed to Public Works.

Drinking Water Quality Management System Policy

The Township of Wilmot is committed to:

  • Complying with all relevant legislation and regulations for the distribution of drinking water in the Province of Ontario
  • Maintaining and continually improving the Quality Management System
  • Providing safe drinking water

Water system reports, licences and permits can be found in our Drinking Water Reports Licences and Permits page.

Water Service Disconnect/Reconnect

To request a water service disconnect/reconnect, please use the Water Services Disconnect/Reconnect Form.

If your request is an emergency due to property damage please call the Utilities On-Call number at 519-998-1862.

Please book an appointment at least 3 business days in advance to give utilities personal sufficient time to verify the functionality of the infrastructure prior to the time of disconnection/reconnection.

Note: Date and times are not guaranteed. Staff will contact you to confirm your booking. We can only accommodate requests between the hours of 7:30 am and 2:30 pm, Monday to Friday.

Private Wells

It is the responsibility of the home owner to ensure the water coming out of their private water well is safe to consume and meets or exceeds provincial standards.

The Region of Waterloo operates the private well testing program. Private well owners are encouraged to test their well water for:

  • Bacteria (free of charge)
  • Nitrate and fluoride testing (small fee)

More information on these services may be found by visiting the Region of Waterloo.

Door-to-Door Testing

The Township does not conduct door-to-door water quality testing. Some private enterprises have been noted to approach residents advising them that their municipal water is unsafe and of poor quality, in an effort to sell home water cleaning systems.

The Township assures the public that the municipal water system is safe to drink.

In Ontario, only fully accredited laboratories licensed to perform drinking water quality testing - not home based testers - are allowed to perform health based tests on drinking water. The strict standards for these labs make the province's municipal drinking water among the best in the world.
